Review

Siddharth Chandra, a director at Asian Studies Center, said the reason of Asian students usually  emphasize the importance of master's degree is the heavy population and poor economy.

Chandra said the heavy population and poor economy makes Asian countries extremely competitive in getting a job.

"When you have a lot of people n a relative poorly economy with a lot of job prospects, it becomes very competitive. So in order to get a job, you need be one out of five people ," Chandra said.

On the contrary, American students do not really need the master's degree as their advantages to find a job because U.S. has prosperous in 12th century, according the Chandra.

"In the case of U.S., which is being prosperous in the 12th century, I think you do not need that advantage," Chandra said.

A lot of Asian students in Michigan State University choose to continue to their study for master's degree. But a lot of American students think it is not really necessary for getting a job.

Yanxuan Li is studying for marketing at University of Rochester as graduate student, after completing a bachelor’s degree in marketing at Michigan State University. She thinks master's degree is really necessary to get a job because of huge competition in China.

“For international students, it is really difficult to find a job if you just have bachelor’s degree. However, if you have a master’s degree, it seems easier,” Li said.

On the contrary, for some American students, they do not think master's degree is really necessary.

Kevin Kuykendoll, a junior student in Michigan State University said master's degree will increase his income but he can find a job without it.

“You can find a good job with just your bachelors, but I think master’s degree will increase my income. And it will open new opportunities for me after I get my first job. So I can find better job that step up to my career path,” Kuykendoll said.
